Ross Hockham's November Sky Guide:
We are moving closer to the Red planet Mars when it will be at opposition next month and at its best
You will still get some good views of it this month.
It is currently above the constellation Orion (The Hunter) which is an easy find due to his Belt of 3 bight blue stars.
Just be careful not to mistake the red giant star Betelgeuse for the planet.
Jupiter and Saturn are still up for us to see with Jupiter still being dominant and bright as the Sun sets.
Saturn is fainter and farther to the gas giants right.
Although we are gradually shifting away from them in our orbit they are still easily visible by the naked eye
and can get great views through telescopes.

Uranus reaches opposition this month (no laughing).
Meaning it will be at it best to see although it is right of the bright cluster M45 Pleiades
and below the constellation, Aries (The Ram).
It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere, so may be hard to find.

Watch Jupiter go over the Moon.
Jupiter lies to the Moon's left, as the sun sets.
As the night goes on Jupiter will seem to move up and over the Moon
being above it at 20:00 and moving to its right by 2am.

Watch one of Jupiter’s Moons appear out of the planets shadow.
Ganymede emerges from Jupiter’s shadow around 16:49 from the planet's left hand side.

Dwarf planet Ceres passes through the constellation Leo (The Lion) this month, passing the Leo Triplet of Galaxies.
It will pass quite close to the NGC 3628 Galaxy nearest to the constellation
passing in between it and the other two Galaxies part of the triplet over a couple of nights.

November's full Moon rises at 16:.20 today, known as yes.. the Beaver Moon.
Although there seems to be disagreement over the origin of its name.
Some say it comes from Native Americans setting beaver traps during this month.
While others say the name comes from the more active time when beavers build their winter dams.
Another name is the Frost Moon.

Uranus reaches opposition tonight (No Giggling).
Although you will need a bit of skilled star hopping to find it.
Like a pale blue blob in the telescopes eyepiece, it wont twinkle like the stars surrounding it.

This morning Europa and Ganymede both transit Jupiter.
Both will be transiting at 12:19am until 1:38am, with Europa’s shadow joining them at 1:05am.

Mars is not far from the morning moon, being closest together at 5am, with the Moon being bottom right of the red planet.
A great signpost to finding the god of war who is nearing his best in December, when he will be at opposition.

Tonight the Northern Taurid Meteor Shower peaks although at only five meteors per hour
it does have a broad peak and the meteors look to burn slow across the sky
making cool bright streaks and leaving trails after them.
Just to the right of the bright cluster the M45 Pleiades where they will radiate from.
Caused by the debris left by Comet 2P/Encke which orbits the Sun every 3.3 years.

Tonight is the peak of another meteor shower, the Leonids, but the moon is in the way.
These Meteors are associated with the Comet 55P/Temple-Tuttle.
Radiating from the constellation Leo (The Lion), they are said to have meteor storms every 33 years or so.
Leo doesn’t really rise until around 2am with the meteors themselves radiating from around the Lion's head.

The moon is at a good liberation to see the Mare Orientale over the next few days.
It was formed by an impact of an asteroid-sized object.
The collision caused ripples in the lunar crust, resulting in the three circular features.
Sadly, from the side on view we get we don’t see the rings of mountains but still worth a peek at the edge of our Moon.
Also, Calisto passes near the top of Jupiter at 23:05 until 00:15
a great chance at taking a cool picture of the moon sitting atop the planet.
Being directly above or below depending on what scope or equipment you are using.

Ganymede is occulted by the planet Jupiter at 17:27 with Europa’s shadow also moving across the planet.
Watch a Moon slip behind a planet whilst another’s shadow transits across it's face.

Today is the new Moon, meaning a few days before or after this date, the Moon will be out of he way.
So, a great time to get those binoculars and telescopes out and look for those nebula, galaxies and fainter sky objects.

A repeat of the 20th occult and shadow transit happens at 21:08.
So if you missed it or it was cloudy, don’t fret you have another chance to pop out and see it.

A waxing Moon is not far from Saturn this evening.
Pop out as the sun sets and see if you can spot the ringed planet just to the right of the crescent moon.
An awesome evening sight.
